Plastic gloves are commonly called disposable gloves or single-use gloves. The name can also refer to a particular material, such as polyethylene, so the exact term depends on the glove’s construction and intended use.
A poly glove is a lightweight disposable glove made from polyethylene, a type of plastic. Poly gloves are often loose-fitting and easy to put on or take off. They’re commonly used for brief tasks such as handling ready-to-eat foods, serving snacks, or keeping hands clean during light-duty work.
Polyethylene gloves are not the same as every kind of disposable glove. Vinyl and nitrile gloves are also single-use options, but they’re made from different materials and have different properties.
Vinyl gloves are made from PVC, a synthetic plastic, and may be described as plastic disposable gloves. Nitrile gloves are made from synthetic rubber rather than polyethylene, though people may loosely group them with disposable gloves because they’re also worn once and discarded.
These materials feel and fit differently. Poly gloves are often roomy, while vinyl and nitrile gloves typically have a closer fit. The right choice depends on the task, workplace requirements, and the product’s labeling. For medical, chemical, or food-handling use, check that the glove is specifically rated for that purpose; a general-purpose glove may not offer the protection you need.
Look at the package for terms such as “polyethylene,” “PE,” “vinyl,” “PVC,” or “nitrile.” Product descriptions may also use “disposable,” “single-use,” or “exam” to explain how the gloves are intended to be used. If the material or suitability is unclear, check the manufacturer’s instructions rather than relying on appearance alone.

Most plastic disposable gloves are designed for one use and should be discarded after use. Reuse can spread dirt or contaminants and may compromise the glove, so follow the package directions and workplace rules.
